We Need Broken Hearts

Matthew 26:75: And Peter remembered the word of Jesus, which said unto him, Before the cock crow, thou shalt deny me thrice. And he went out, and wept bitterly.

Numbers 32:23: But if ye will not do so, behold, ye have sinned against the LORD: and be sure your sin will find you out.

Peter wept because he had betrayed the greatest love he had ever experienced. When we sin we also betray the greatest love that we have ever experienced. He wept because Jesus was an eyewitness to his sin.

Luke 22:60-62: And Peter said, Man, I know not what thou sayest. And immediately, while he yet spake, the cock crew. 61 And the Lord turned, and looked upon Peter. And Peter remembered the word of the Lord, how he had said unto him, Before the cock crow, thou shalt deny me thrice. 62 And Peter went out, and wept bitterly.

Jesus is also an eyewitness to our sin. We are often too callous to admit who we have sinned against and weep over it. The big, tough, bold fisherman wept bitterly. Do we weep bitterly over our sin? I do not often enough weep bitterly over my sin. More often I weep over the consequences of my sin. My flesh weeps over the consequences. My heart needs to weep over my sin, become broken and contrite and thereby avoid the consequences. Peter had a broken and a contrite heart. Many other individuals in the Bible had broken and contrite hearts. We need hearts like that.

Psalms 34:18: The LORD is nigh unto them that are of a broken heart; and saveth such as be of a contrite spirit.

Psalms 51:17: The sacrifices of God are a broken spirit: a broken and a contrite heart, O God, thou wilt not despise.

Isaiah 6:5: Then said I, Woe is me! for I am undone; because I am a man of unclean lips, and I dwell in the midst of a people of unclean lips: for mine eyes have seen the King, the LORD of hosts.

Jeremiah 15:10a: Woe is me, my mother, that thou hast borne me a man of strife and a man of contention to the whole earth! . . .

Luke 18:13: And the publican, standing afar off, would not lift up so much as his eyes unto heaven, but smote upon his breast, saying, God be merciful to me a sinner.

Psalms 51:1b-4a: . . . A Psalm of David, when Nathan the prophet came unto him, after he had gone in to Bathsheba. Have mercy upon me, O God, according to thy lovingkindness: according unto the multitude of thy tender mercies blot out my transgressions. 2 Wash me throughly from mine iniquity, and cleanse me from my sin. 3 For I acknowledge my transgressions: and my sin is ever before me. 4 Against thee, thee only, have I sinned, and done this evil in thy sight: . . .

Lord give us hearts that are broken over sin so we might have the joy of our salvation.

Psalms 51:12: Restore unto me the joy of thy salvation; and uphold me with thy free spirit.
